Why subscribe to Between?

It’s not like you haven’t picked a side. Politics? Culture? Identity? You do your research. You know where you stand. At the same time, you seek a reprieve from the extreme polarization that is tearing us apart. You sense there has to be a better way.

As a person of mixed race, I have always recognized our tendency to think in binary categories. And I’ve always been drawn to the gray areas between them. Whether it’s race, class, gender, politics or religion, we are taught to think in absolutes. Our team. Our rights. Our side. And it’s killing us.

Sure, identity is a kind of anchor. But an anchor is attached to a chain. What if we saw identity less as a status or condition and more as an evolving process?

Between contains stories from the headlines and popular culture that look beyond the binary. Because that’s where change is possible.
